How to Find Your Perfect Bra Size

Most women are wearing the wrong bra size — and don't even know it. If your straps dig in by lunchtime, your band rides up your back, or your cups gape or spill over, that's your body telling you something your size chart isn't. The good news: finding your true size takes five minutes, a soft measuring tape, and a bra you're already comfortable in.

Here's a simple, no-guesswork guide to getting it right.

Why Bra Fit Matters More Than You Think

A well-fitted bra isn't just about comfort — though comfort is a big part of it. The right size:

  • Supports you properly, reducing strain on your shoulders, neck, and back
  • Improves posture by distributing weight evenly across the band, not just the straps
  • Makes clothes fit better, since a smooth, supported shape is the foundation every outfit sits on
  • Prevents long-term issues, like skin irritation, indentation marks, and unnecessary shoulder pain

Studies on bra fit consistently find that the vast majority of women are wearing a band that's too big and a cup that's too small — usually because they haven't been measured since their teens.

What You'll Need

  • A soft measuring tape (the kind used for sewing — not a metal one)
  • A bra you already own, ideally a non-padded one, worn with no padding tricks
  • A mirror, so you can check the tape sits level all around

Step 1: Measure Your Band Size

Wrap the measuring tape snugly around your ribcage, directly under your bust, where the band of your bra would sit. Keep it parallel to the floor — not riding up at the back.

  • The tape should be snug but not tight enough to dig in
  • Round the number to the nearest whole inch
  • If the number is even, add 4 inches. If it's odd, add 5 inches.

This adjusted number is your band size. (Example: if you measure 30 inches, your band size is 34.)

Step 2: Measure Your Bust Size

Now measure around the fullest part of your bust — usually across the nipple line — keeping the tape level and not pulled tight. Round this number to the nearest whole inch too.

Step 3: Calculate Your Cup Size

Subtract your band measurement (Step 1) from your bust measurement (Step 2). The difference in inches tells you your cup size:

Put the two together — band size + cup size — and that's your starting point (for example, 34B or 36C).

Step 4: Try It On and Check the Fit

Numbers get you close, but every brand and style fits a little differently. Once you're wearing your size, check for these five signs of a good fit:

  1. The band stays level and doesn't ride up at the back. If it rides up, the band is too big.
  2. You can fit two fingers under the band, snugly but comfortably — not more, not less.
  3. The center gore (the middle part between the cups) lies flat against your chest. If it's floating away from your skin, the cup is too small.
  4. No spillage over the top or sides, and no gaping or wrinkling in the cup fabric. Spillage means size up in the cup; gaping means size down.
  5. Straps stay in place without digging in, and you shouldn't need to constantly adjust them through the day.

Common Sizing Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wearing the same size across every brand. Sizing varies — treat the number as a starting range, not a fixed rule.
  • Sizing up in the band when the cups feel tight. Try going down a band size and up a cup size instead (a 34C and a 36B often have a very similar cup volume — this is called "sister sizing").
  • Ignoring weight or life changes. Pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and even changes in exercise routine can shift your size. It's worth remeasuring every 6 months.
  • Buying based on the band only. The band does most of the support work, but the cup shape determines whether you actually feel comfortable in it.

When Should You Remeasure?

  • Every 6 months, as a general habit
  • After a noticeable weight change
  • During and after pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • If a bra you've had for a while suddenly feels different — fabric and elastic do stretch out over time
